Where to stay
Castleton is a small village with pubs, inns and guesthouses, and it fills up on busy weekends, so book early or look at the other villages in the Hope Valley. Manchester and Sheffield, the start and finish cities, have far more rooms.
Watching on race day
The gorge is narrow, so the steep middle section is where you see the riders closest. It is a short walk up from Castleton. Expect big crowds: it is one of the best-known climbs in England.
Ride it yourself
Winnats is a rite of passage for British cyclists. Get into a low gear before the road kicks up in the middle, and keep a steady rhythm.
