Where to stay

Orcines, near the base of the mountain, and Royat, on the edge of Clermont-Ferrand, are the closest. Clermont-Ferrand has the most rooms and is where the stage starts, so you can see the riders roll out in the morning before heading for the volcano.

Watching on race day

The road to the top is closed to private cars, and when the men's Tour finished here in 2023, fans were kept off the upper slopes. Expect limits on where you can stand again, and check the organisers' access rules before you go. The lower slopes and the roads around the base are easier to reach.

Ride it yourself

The summit road is closed to traffic, and only rarely open to bikes. The Panoramique des Dômes rack railway and the old mule path take you to the top, and the quiet roads around the volcanoes are great for riding.
